Pall ring is a new type of filler improved on Raschig ring. Compared with the later, pall ring has improved the liquid distribution of filler layer greatly, with open windows on ring sidewall. Therefore it has productivity, low resistance, operating flexible and higher efficiency. Pall ring is widely applied to industry. It is still one of major annular fillers that has been adopted.

Metal Pall Ring is packaged and shipped by volume. A volume adjustment factor must be applied to the calculated column. Geometric volume to estimate the shipping volume required to properly fill a packed bed to account for edge and settling effects. The volume adjustment factor depends upon the packing shape and size and the bed diameter.
A contingency allowance for installation losses, typically around 5%, should be added to the shipping volume calculated above.
Strict conformity with recommended installation procedure is necessary to ensure consistent duplication of design performance. Installation techniques that result in installation crew walking on or raking the packing must never be employed. Incorrect installation procedures can result in substantial packing shortfall (i.e. installed volume not sufficient for the required bed height resulting in performance losses).
The metal pall ring random packing was developed by BASF company in 1940s on the basis of raschig ring. It is made of sheet metal by punching and rolling. Two rows of window holes with tongue leaves extending inside are opened on the ring wall. Each row of window has five tongue leaves bending into the ring, pointing to the ring center, almost connecting at the center, and the upper and lower layers of window holes are staggered with each other. Generally, the total area of the opening is about 35% of the whole ring area. As a result of opening windows on the ring wall, the distribution of gas and liquid in the packing bed and the mass transfer performance are greatly improved compared with that in the raschig ring. People have made plenty of study of its performance, so pall ring is still one of the main random packing used at present.
