2. Function of structured packing in distillation column
Through the packing, the two-phase flow is upward and downward convection. Gravity is the driving force of liquid flow, and pressure difference is the driving force of gas flow. The two phase flow is mass transfer and heat transfer through the two forms of film surface and spray. The mass transfer and heat transfer of the two phases in the plate column take place in the gas-liquid mixed phase on the upper surface of the tray, on the liquid layer surface of the downcomer and on the bubbling area caused by the mass transfer elements.

4. structured packing helps to get material balance
Material balance means that the amount of material entering the tower in unit time should be equal to the sum of the amount of material leaving the tower. The material balance reflects the production capacity of the tower, which is mainly regulated by the feed volume and the discharge volume at the top and bottom of the tower. During the operation, the change of material balance is reflected in the liquid level at the bottom of the tower. When the operation of the tower does not conform to the overall material balance, it can be reflected from the change of tower pressure difference. For example, if more is in and less is out, the tower pressure difference will rise. For a fixed distillation column, the tower pressure difference should be within a certain range. If the tower pressure difference is too large, the rising steam speed in the tower is too large, the entrainment of mist is serious, and even flooding occurs, which destroys the normal operation; if the tower pressure difference is too small, the rising steam speed in the tower is too small, the gas-liquid two-phase mass transfer effect on the tray is reduced, and even liquid leakage occurs, which greatly reduces the tray efficiency. If the material balance is not well mastered, the operation of the whole tower will be in a state of confusion. Mastering the material balance is a key in the tower operation. If the normal material balance is destroyed, it will affect the other two equilibria, that is, the vapor-liquid equilibrium can not achieve the expected effect, and the heat balance is also destroyed and needs to be readjusted.
