Experienced engineers make the design of Hualai chimney tray
1. Chimney tray application:
If you need to draw off the liquid partially or totally from some height of the tower, chimney trays are used. But considering the high turbulence velocity of liquid in structured packing, chimney trays are recommended among two structured packing beds.
2. Chimney tray brief view:
Tower internal Type | vapor distributor & chimney tray |
Tower diameter | > 1000 mm |
Liquid Range | 20.5 - 100 m³/h/m² |
Support at Shell | Support ring and clips for major beams if the diameter is >3000 mm |
Construction type | Like a chimney tray it is designed in parts to pass through the column manway and to be installed together by welding or bolts and nuts. |
Design | The distributor is designed to generate a controlled pressure drop through the chimneys that makes the vapor spreading across the entire section of the column. Normally the design pressure drop ranges from 10 to 50 mm H2O |
Levelling method | The operation of this device is not affected by a possible out of levelness of the support ring |
Applications | Typical application is below packed beds, to distibute the vapor and collect the liquid to be drawn-off or redistributed to a lower bed |
3. Chimney tray important considerations:
Because the chimney tray frequently maintains a fairly high liquid level ( consequently a tremendous weight ), we shall pay special attention to its design. The first point is the positioning of the drain nozzle. It is a flat chimney tray when the nozzle is at the tray floor level. Or a portion of the tray floor can be made lower than the rest of area to form a sump and then the nozzle to be located at the sump floor. Both designs require the same liquid head to force the design flow rate through the nozzles. We can locate the nozzle in a sump to lower the liquid level on the chimney tray by an amount equal to the head requirement. This reduces the liquid weight supported by the tray, but has little effect on residence time. For low liquid flow, usually a 6 - 12 inch height chimney is enough. And for high liquid flow, a 12 - 18 inch height chimney is used if the drain nozzle is at an inlet sump. There should be hats above all the chimneys by a sufficient space to provide a peripheral area of 1.25 times of the chimney area. If a leak-free design is required, the inlet sump should be seal-welded to the chimney floor, and use gaskets when necessary. The center sump is preferred over a side sump. Because some flow restriction can occur at very high liquid rates due to the shorter weir lengths of side sumps.

5. Hualai is able to provide various kinds of tower internals:
Tower internals play very important role in effective mass transfer performance. So they need to be designed carefully for both process and mechanical point. Meanwhile, our engineers put great effort into structured packing and random packing development in the recent years. The column internals include mist eliminators, feed pipes, distributors, re-distributors, support plates, bed limiters, collector trays, chimney trays etc.
